Can You Customise IKEA PAX to Look Built-In?

IKEA PAX wardrobe

What’s possible, what’s not, and how to get it looking great without breaking the bank.

Not everyone has the budget for fully bespoke cabinetry—and honestly, not everyone needs it.

Sometimes, all you need is a little structure. A place for everything. A wardrobe that doesn’t leave your clothes in piles, or a corner that finally pulls its weight.

That’s why so many people turn to the IKEA PAX wardrobe system. It’s flexible, affordable, and refreshingly straightforward. But if you’ve ever wondered whether it could look more built-in, more custom, more intentional—you’re not alone. To be clear - I don’t use any affiliate links or get any kickbacks from IKEA - but living in Sweden and working as a builder there has taught me to appreciate their products 🇸🇪

This post isn’t a pitch. It’s a guide to help you decide whether a custom IKEA PAX built-in wardrobe is right for your space, your budget, and your needs.

💡 Why IKEA PAX Is a Solid Starting Point

Let’s start with what it gets right:

  • A variety of sizes and layouts

  • Excellent internal organisation

  • Clean lines and neutral finishes

  • Easy design tools (you can mock up your wardrobe online)

  • Very decent pricing

It’s a system that works with you. You can get a layout that makes sense for how you actually live—and that’s something even expensive custom wardrobes often forget.

But here’s the catch: it’s still a flat-pack box. And unless your walls, floor, and ceiling are perfectly aligned (spoiler: they rarely are), it’s not going to feel like a built-in wardrobe on its own.

🪚 So, Can You Make It Look Custom?

Absolutely. But it takes a bit more than just following the assembly guide.
Here’s what actually makes a difference:

1. Planning for Fit

Instead of squeezing a PAX into a gap and hoping for the best, measure everything—ceiling height, skirting board depth, wall quirks. You might need to go smaller and fill the gaps intentionally rather than force it.

2. Adding Fillers & Framing

This is the secret sauce. Slim panels between the wardrobe and the wall can make it feel flush and finished. Shadow lines, scribe boards, and top framing help integrate it into the room—and make it feel like part of the home.

3. Level & Secure Install

PAX needs to be properly levelled and fixed to the wall. Not just for looks, but for safety—especially if you’re adding drawers or heavier doors.

4. Personalising the Finish

Swap the handles. Paint the side panels. Add an LED strip or shelf above. You don’t have to go full bespoke to make it feel like yours.

📏 What It’s Not

To be fair, PAX wardrobes aren’t a magic bullet. They’re not made of solid timber. They’re not designed to wrap around corners or fit under sloped ceilings without help. They’re functional and flexible—but not miraculous.

That said, with a bit of care and a few thoughtful choices, they can absolutely punch above their weight—and provide real, lasting value.

🏡 Real Homes, Real Life

I’ve helped plenty of clients turn IKEA wardrobes into something that feels meant to be there. Sometimes it’s by framing it between two walls and adding a cornice. Sometimes it’s just a really neat install with a few clever adjustments.

Other times, people do it themselves—and they do a brilliant job.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about perfection. It’s about creating a space that works better for you—without emptying your wallet or overcomplicating things.

🌱 A Final Thought

You don’t need to spend tens of thousands to feel good in your home.
You just need clarity, a plan, and a little help when things get tricky.

So whether you do it yourself, call in a joiner, or something in between—know that it is possible to get something that works, fits, and lasts. And that, truly, is the magic.
